Louisiana archives and collecting institutions are in crisis. They face risks ranging from catastrophic hurricanes and flooding to humidity, mold, and storage concerns, and we need to act fast to save them.
The Louisiana Historical Association, in conjunction with the Society of American Archivists Foundation, Louisiana Archives & Manuscript Association, Guilbeau Center for Public History, and Center for Louisiana Studies has initiated the SAVE OUR ARCHIVES initiative.
This campaign is the outgrowth of the “History Lost? Saving Louisiana’s Historical Archives” project. CLICK HERE TO VIEW THE PROJECT’S EXECUTIVE SUMMARY.
The first step to SAVE OUR ARCHIVES was a one-day workshop that was held October 5th, 2018 at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. CLICK TO VIEW THE PROGRAM FROM THAT WORKSHOP. The goals of the workshop were: identify archives-in-crisis, figure out how to help them, and implement a long-term program.
Part this long-term initiative will be a grant program to assist institutions in peril. Funds raised will be used to give grants to archives in need to aid them with their preservation efforts. More information about the grant program will be available soon.
